Alexander Richardson Grant, the namesake of the firm, started his accounting career at Ernst & Ernst (a predecessor of Ernst & Young), but, decided it was time to be his own boss at the age of 26 and opened Alexander Grant & Co. in the year 1924. The company finally became Grant Thornton in its current form as well as seeded the creation of Grant Thornton International in the year 1980 when 50 international accounting firms formed a global organization.
